Acceptable Use Policy
Last updated: February 28, 2026
1. Our Approach
Listry is built on the principle that people should be free to create and share knowledge. We do not censor ideas, opinions, or lawful expression. At the same time, we have a legal and moral obligation to prevent our platform from being used for illegal activity, exploitation, or targeted violence.
This policy draws a clear line: lawful content stays up; illegal content comes down; content in the gray area is handled with transparency and proportionality. This Acceptable Use Policy ("AUP") supplements our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
2. Zero-Tolerance Content (Immediate Removal)
The following content is absolutely prohibited. It will be removed immediately upon detection, the account will be permanently banned without appeal, and we will report the content to relevant authorities as required by law:
- Child sexual abuse material (CSAM) in any form, including real imagery, AI-generated content, illustrated content, or text describing the sexual exploitation of minors. We are legally required to report CSAM to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC)
- Terrorism and violent extremism — content that promotes, recruits for, or provides material support to designated terrorist organizations; manifestos glorifying mass violence; specific and actionable plans for violent attacks
- Non-consensual intimate imagery — sexually explicit images or videos shared without the consent of the depicted individual, including "revenge porn" and AI-generated non-consensual intimate content
- Human trafficking — content that facilitates or promotes the trafficking of persons for labor or sexual exploitation
- Imminent violence — specific, credible, and actionable threats of violence against identified individuals or groups, including doxxing with explicit calls for violence
3. Prohibited Content (Removal + Escalating Enforcement)
The following content is prohibited and will be removed. Accounts posting this content will receive warnings for first offenses and escalating consequences (temporary suspension, permanent ban) for repeated violations:
- Illegal goods and services — lists promoting the sale or distribution of illegal drugs, weapons, counterfeit goods, stolen property, or other contraband
- Fraud and scams — content designed to defraud users, including phishing, pyramid schemes, fake investment opportunities, or deceptive commercial practices
- Malware and malicious links — content containing or linking to malware, viruses, phishing sites, or other malicious code or URLs
- Coordinated harassment — organized campaigns to harass, bully, or intimidate specific individuals, including brigading, mass reporting abuse, or coordinated doxxing
- Impersonation — falsely claiming to be another person, organization, or entity in a way that is intended to deceive
- Spam and platform manipulation — unsolicited advertising, engagement manipulation (fake likes, fake saves), or creating multiple accounts to circumvent enforcement
- Personally identifiable information — publishing another person's private information (home address, phone number, financial information, government IDs) without their explicit consent
4. Restricted Content (Labeled, Not Removed)
Some content may be lawful but not appropriate for all audiences or contexts. Rather than removing this content, we may apply labels, reduce its visibility in recommendations and search results, or restrict it from appearing on browse pages. The content remains accessible via direct link. This includes:
- Content containing graphic descriptions of violence that is not glorifying or promoting violence
- Content with strong language or profanity
- Controversial but lawful political, religious, or social commentary
- Sensitive topics that may be distressing to some audiences (e.g., descriptions of trauma, addiction recovery resources)
We do not restrict content simply because it is unpopular, provocative, or offensive to some people. Disagreement is not a basis for content restriction. We restrict content only when there is a clear reason related to audience appropriateness or platform safety.
5. What We Do NOT Moderate
To be clear about what is not a violation of this policy:
- Opinions you disagree with
- Factual claims that may be disputed or controversial
- Criticism of public figures, governments, religions, or ideologies
- Satire, parody, and humor (even if offensive to some)
- Discussion of sensitive historical events
- Lists about legal products, services, or activities (even if some people disapprove of them)
- Counter-speech responding to offensive content
Listry is a platform for organizing and sharing knowledge. We believe the best response to speech you disagree with is more speech, not censorship. We will only act on content that crosses the clear lines defined in Sections 2 and 3 above.
6. Automated Detection
We use automated systems to detect certain categories of prohibited content. These systems are designed to catch the most harmful content quickly:
- Hash matching: Known CSAM and terrorist propaganda are detected using perceptual hash matching against databases maintained by organizations like NCMEC and the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT)
- Content scanning: AI-powered text analysis flags content matching patterns of prohibited material for human review
- PII detection: Automated systems scan published lists for exposed personal information (phone numbers, email addresses, etc.) and alert creators
- Spam detection: Behavioral analysis identifies spam patterns, engagement manipulation, and coordinated inauthentic behavior
Automated systems may make mistakes. Content flagged by automated systems (except zero-tolerance categories) is queued for human review before action is taken. We continuously improve our detection systems to reduce both false positives and false negatives.
7. Reporting Content
If you encounter content that you believe violates this policy, you can report it:
- In-app reporting: Use the report button on any list, item, or comment to flag content for review
- Email: Send a report to [email protected] with the URL of the content and a description of the violation
How we handle reports:
- All reports are acknowledged within 24 hours
- Reports involving zero-tolerance content (Section 2) are prioritized for immediate review
- Standard reports are reviewed within 48 hours
- We evaluate each report on its merits — a report is not proof of a violation. We do not automatically remove reported content or penalize reported users
- We do not disclose the identity of reporters to the reported party
- Abuse of the reporting system (filing false or malicious reports to harass other users) is itself a violation of this policy
8. Enforcement & Consequences
Violations of this policy result in graduated enforcement actions:
- Warning: A notification identifying the violation, explaining which policy was violated, and requesting corrective action. First-time, minor violations typically receive a warning
- Content removal: Removal of specific lists, items, comments, or other content that violates this policy. Creators are notified of what was removed and why
- Temporary suspension: Temporary restriction of account privileges (publishing, commenting, liking) for a defined period. Applied for repeated or moderately severe violations
- Permanent ban: Permanent removal of your account and all associated content. Applied for severe violations (Section 2) or persistent patterns of policy violations after prior warnings
The severity of the response depends on the nature, frequency, and impact of the violation. We may skip steps in cases of severe violations. All enforcement actions (except zero-tolerance permanent bans) can be appealed.
9. Appeals
If your content is removed or your account is restricted, you may appeal within 30 days:
- Appeals are reviewed by a different person than the one who made the original decision
- You will receive a response within 7 business days
- If the appeal is upheld, your content will be restored and/or your account restrictions will be lifted
- Appeals for permanent bans related to CSAM, terrorism, non-consensual intimate imagery, or imminent violence threats are not available
To submit an appeal, email [email protected] with your account information and a description of why you believe the action was incorrect.
10. Community Guidelines
Beyond the rules above, we encourage all users to contribute positively to the Listry community:
- Create lists with accurate, helpful, and well-organized content
- Write clear titles and descriptions that reflect your list's actual content
- Categorize lists appropriately using the most relevant category
- Keep lists up to date and correct inaccuracies when you find them
- Respect the effort of other creators — credit sources, don't plagiarize
- Engage constructively in comments — debate ideas, not people
- Report genuine violations, not content you simply disagree with
11. Intellectual Property
Respect the intellectual property rights of others. Do not publish lists that reproduce copyrighted material in its entirety without permission. Factual information, titles, short descriptions, and curated recommendations are generally acceptable. Extensive reproduction of copyrighted text, images, or other media is prohibited.
If you believe your intellectual property has been infringed on Listry, please submit a DMCA notice to [email protected]. See our Terms of Service for DMCA notice requirements.
12. Third-Party Content & Links
Listry may contain links to third-party websites or references to third-party products and services within user-created lists. Suitethink does not endorse, verify, or assume responsibility for the accuracy, legality, or content of any third-party material. Users follow third-party links at their own risk. Some lists may contain affiliate links — these are disclosed on the list.
13. Transparency
We are committed to transparency in our content moderation practices. We will publish periodic transparency reports covering the number of reports received, actions taken, appeals processed, and legal requests received. We believe accountability is essential to maintaining user trust.
14. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the date at the top of this page and notifying registered users by email at least 14 days before changes take effect. Your continued use of Listry after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
